Melbourne's 86 tram route as a giant open air gallery of street art

fff

Melbourne, Australia is internationally known for its street art and its trams. Melbourne Street Art 86 imagines Melbourne's 86 tram route as though it were a giant open air gallery of street art with its own regular tram service. The pages in the dark blue side bar below have photos of street art by the suburbs the tram passes through. Locations are noted by tram stop, street location and also on maps of the area that can be downloaded or printed. Other Melbourne suburbs rich in street art are also featured.

Melbourne Street Art locations away from the 86 Tram Route:  Windsor & Prahran

(Click on any image to see an enlarged version)

Many of the most spectacular and interesting street art locations in Melbourne and its suburbs are away from the 86 tram route, or further away than roughly five minutes walk from an 86 tram stop, thus not allowing them to be included in the core part of this site.

The other locations pages are the setting for photographs and location information for street art from these areas. These pages do not currently have maps or guides like the main suburb pages on the 86 tram route, but these may be added at a later date.

Getting to Windsor and Prahran

Prahran is south east of the City of Melbourne, below the suburb of South Yarra. It is about 15 minutes from the city centre by train and 20 minutes by tram. Windsor is the southern part of Prahran, bordered by [High Street] in the north and the Dandenong Highway in the south. It is a similar travel time from the city – a few minutes longer by tram and a minute or so by train.

Both suburbs are bisected north to south by Chapel Street, a popular shopping street with many restaurants and cafes.

I have organised the locations on this page moving North from the southern edge of Windsor, along Chapel Street and then Greville Street to central Prahran. This is the direction I would recommend seeing the area, as you will get to see the change in atmosphere from the more bohemian part of Chapel Street in Windsor to the more exclusive parts as you approach the well-heeled suburb of South Yarra. Also, if you are travelling by train, Windsor station is much closer to Chapel Street than Prahran Station.

The first location below can easily be reached by taking the 5 or 64 tram from Swanston Street in the City and alighting at stop 32. Windsor station is on the Sandringham Line (trains depart only from Flinders Street Station and do not travel through the City Loop). Trams that travel through Prahran include the 8 and the 31, both can be caught from Swanston Street in the City.
