Melbourne's 86 tram route as a giant open air gallery of street art

fff

Melbourne, Australia is internationally known for its street art and its trams. Melbourne Street Art 86 imagines Melbourne's 86 tram route as though it were a giant open air gallery of street art with its own regular tram service. The pages in the dark blue side bar below have photos of street art by the suburbs the tram passes through. Locations are noted by tram stop, street location and also on maps of the area that can be downloaded or printed. Other Melbourne suburbs rich in street art are also featured.

How to make the best use of this site

A day or half day outing or as you please
This site was primarily intended to be used as a guide to a day or half day outing offering a mixture of viewing street art at various points on the way, sight seeing and discovering local food, shopping, parks or whatever else might happen to appeal in the areas the tram passes through.

Thus you will find, in addition to the main pages of street art locations, 'Travelling on the 86 tram' a description of the 86 tram route and its sights and attractions. The page also includes a route map of the 86 with sights and attractions marked by tram stop, corresponding to a list of things to do and see (both of which can be downloaded or printed as a pdf).

Of course you can dip into and make use of the site as you please; use it as an online gallery of street art, as a place to find creative inspiration, or it could even be used as a resource for students studying public and/or street art at a tertiary level, or younger students pursuing a project in high school.

Street art on the 86 tram route is mostly found in the following six suburbs, all of which are within about 40 minutes travel from the city centre on the tram and most are a lot closer:
  • City of Melbourne
  • Fitzroy
  • Collingwood
  • Clifton Hill
  • Northcote
  • Thornbury
There are also a few examples along the first few tram stops in:
  • Preston
And in central Bundoora, a considerable distance from the city centre, through a journey that could be combined with a day out in Bundoora Park with its many activities.

Other locations pages
There are also pages from some other locations in inner Melbourne (North Richmond & Abbotsford, Richmond, Windsor & Prahran, [St Kilda TO COME]) that are not on the 86 tram line, but are well worth a visit as some of these areas are as rich in street art as the city centre. These pages do not have maps at present, but do have street location information.

Main suburb pages
Each suburb has its own page, accessed through a link on the dark blue sidebar to the left.

The links are named after the suburb and the main street the tram passes along during its journey through that area.

Maps
Each page has a map* showing:
  • The route of the 86 tram through the suburb
  • 86 trams stops on the route
  • The main side streets for orientation, and any lanes or alleys containing street art
  • Principal street art locations on the road the tram travels down, and in streets, lanes and alleys lead off it, or roads immediately parallel to it - basically almost always within five minutes walking distance from a tram stop
  • A link below the map to download a pdf version, and print it if you so wish
* Note: Maps for some pages are not yet complete, but will be posted very soon

The diagram below shows the map for the Fitzroy suburb on the FITZROY - Getrude Street page:

Guides
Most pages also have a second link underneath the map to enable download and printing of a pdf of an abridged version of the page you are viewing. The guides include only photographs that help find street art locations, and a few examples to remind you what is there, but they have virtually all of the location information from the page. This includes all of the information described in the section below. The guides are designed to used like a mini guide book, and take with you on your journey on the 86 tram... or otherwise if that is you preference.

Alternatively, use the site live and on location with a tablet.

Street art locations
Each principal street art location on the 86 tram route in that suburb has:
  • An orange number. This is usually in sequence following the tram as it travels from Docklands near central Melbourne to the terminus at Bundoora in the outer suburbs. In some cases, where street art is in both the main street, and one parallel to it, a different sequence may be adopted, to avoid jumping from one street to another
  • Blue text with an approximate street location and any notes that might help you find it
  • Green text with the nearest 86 tram stop. The stops are first numbered in an odd sort of way from the Docklands D11, D10, D2, D1 and then 119 and 120. This because the tram route was extended a few year ago. Once you reach the Spencer Street stop, they commence from 1 and continue to 71, at the end of the line. In some areas tram stop numbers are missing. This is due to the construction of accessible tram stops, during which some minor stop locations were merged into one major stop
  • Some locations have an establishing photograph showing the general area to help you find the works featured.

The orange numbers that prefix the street location correspond with the orange numbers on the maps of the suburb.

Other locations
Some locations on the main suburb pages indicate areas you can visit which are not part of the main tour of street art on the 86 tram route. Where this is the case you will see the dark orange heading below, with details provided in italic font. These locations are featured on Other locations pages.

Exploring for yourself
There are many more examples of street art in these locations than I have featured here, so it is well worth making your own explorations to see what you can discover and what appeals to you. I have only featured works within about 150m of the tram tracks, and exploring further you may find other pieces. New street art and revisions or additions to old street art is being created on a regular basis in some locations and in some cases is removed by local councils or building occupants and owners; what you find when you visit actual sites may be different from the images hosted here.

Despite exploring fairly extensively on a number of occasions, I may also have missed a number of works. For example, I walked along the 86 tram route in my home suburb of Northcote several times before finding this site below. I must have been past this alleyway off High Street hundreds of times over the past few years and never once noticed it; there is quite a bit of street art around Melbourne in places you never knew were there.
